I’ve been keeping an eye on a project called Overline Network for a little while. They offered people the opportunity to claim a ‘piece of land’ in their metaverse for free, and one of the main selling points was that, unlike most Web 3 projects, which require you to sign up by linking your crypto wallet as well as often needing to buy an NFT, they only require your email address. The advantage of this is the reduction of the risk factor, because linking a crypto wallet with anything is always a risk if you’re blind signing.
- One of the easiest ways to lower the risk when having to use a wallet is to create a ‘burner’ wallet, which you use for tasks like this, and you make sure that you keep the minimum amount of assets in that wallet (ideally none) so that if it does get compromised and drained, the loss is minimal or nothing.
But with this project, this isn’t an issue, as you just need an email address, and the same principle should apply – use a ‘burner’ email address to sign up for promos and one with a strong spam filter. I find Gmail’s spam filter to be particularly good.
I’ll say up front that I have no idea how this project will pan out (do we, ever?) and they do try to entice you into buying an upgrade once you sign up, which is to pre-order a ‘founder’s edition oRouter’. They, of course, offer a discount on this, which you can see by clicking a link and entering your geographic location. This gives you the chance to mine resources by wirelessly recording and forwarding transactions. It seems that they’re trying to create something similar to Starlink (but decentralized) to provide free basic internet connectivity without a cell plan.
I haven’t signed up for an oRouter; therefore, I haven’t committed any funds at all towards this project. I have simply signed up with my email address and claimed my land. Each plot of land relates to a plot in the real world, but you have to wait until they reveal it to you to find out whereabouts your plot is. There is a lot that is yet to be revealed by this project, but for now, they are trying to encourage people to sign up and claim their plots of land, which is why I am writing this blog post.
- They offer one extra plot of land for every person wsignsigns, , which is why I am promoting my own link, because I would like more free plots (who doesn’t like free stuff?)
- They are also creating a sense of urgency because on the 24th October 2022, they are telling land owners to check their plot.
- After all, certain plots will have rewards landing on their land in the shape of ‘oFriends’.
- You can also get free stuff just by logging in each day – they give you 1 ‘oCash’ each day that you sign in, and they have also announced happy hours where you get 6 oCash for signing in during that hour – these times are Fridays 910 PM EST and Tuesdays 9-10 AM EST.
Again, I have no idea if these assets will turn out to be of any value, but as I explore the new frontiers of the Web 3 digital wor, I try to pick up and stack as much free stuff as I can while evaluating if the effort involved to do so is worth the time and effort that it takes. Obviously, it’s a huge learning curve and I try and gain (and then share) as much knowledge as I can along the way as I carry this out, but the key to that is developing a good filter to quickly evaluate which knowledge has universal value and which is just project-specific information which is designed purely to make projects interesting and to suck people in to spend their time and resources on that project.
Some projects are worth a ‘deep-dive’, others aren’t. But it’s the filtering process that is important because, without that filtering, valuable time (and resources) can be wasted on pointless activities. So with this one, I think it’s worth a little delve, and it’s definitely worth just signing up and claiming a plot of land and watching what develops.
